2012 Academic Improvement Award (Illinois Honor Roll):

District 69 has been notified by the State Board of Education that Edison School has earned the Academic Improvement Award! Only 81 schools across the state earned the designation in 2012, so this is something to be very proud of. From the ISBE, “honors...schools across the state that have posted substantial gains. These schools demonstrate that exemplary progress is possible at every level and can be sustained.” You will see a certificate attached to the Board Report commemorating our success.

This award recognizes Edison School, and the staff should be very proud of their hard work. The award does not specifically recognize the hard work of the Madison School staff, but I hope that they too will take great pride in this award. The Edison staff would be the very first to recognize that they are building upon the foundation laid by the Madison staff.

BOTH SCHOOLS SHOULD CELEBRATE THIS AWARD!!!

UPDATED WITH STATE OF THE SCHOOLS ADDRESS! VIDEO! Every year in January, I deliver the District 69 State of the Schools Address. Part of this address is also designed to celebrate our successes. This year we have worked to make a video presentation. We hope that you take an opportunity to watch and be proud of District 69. We should be proud of what we have accomplished, the effort that is put forward every day and the success of our kids. We have tried to celebrate many aspects of the District 69 organization. We’ve done this because anytime just one student succeeds it is often because of the work of so many.

We celebrate our finances and operations because we know that a more efficient organization is one that can invest resources on kids.

We celebrate our Board because we know it is a commitment to vision and governance that allows us to see the way forward.

We celebrate our Staff, because that is where the instructional work happens and students succeed.

We celebrate our kids, because… frankly, they are worth celebrating!

A break from School is fun and I hope you will all take time to enjoy yourselves, but it is also important for our students to keep their minds active during the long break. Please encourage your children to read (or read with them!) a little bit each day.

GOONEY BIRD GREENE SUMMARY: Summer has come to a crashing halt in the little town of Watertower. The kids don't want to be back in school; they are listless and bored. Suddenly, the classroom door bursts open and there, wearing pajamas and cowboy boots, stands Gooney Bird Greene! The class is never the same again.  Gooney Bird casts herself as the hero in the most improbable, outlandish stories: how she arrived from China on a flying carpet, how she got a lovely pair of diamond earrings at the local palace, how she directed a symphony orchestra while driving through the center of town, and how her beloved cat, Catman, was consumed by a cow! Are these stories really true? Of course they are because, as Gooney Bird proudly proclaims, she only tells "absolutely true stories!" In blending funny and memorable characters with colorful details and her distinctive flair for suspense, Gooney Bird awakens the students' imaginations. They come to realize their lives are as unique as Gooney Bird's and that they, too, can cast themselves as the heroes in their own true tales of discovery and adventure. 

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Buy Recycled

To District 69 Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff,

This is to remind everybody of our district ecology and recycling collections! All donations and contributions are welcome!

Each school collects the following electronic items in their main offices (we receive money in return for these):

• Cell Phones
• Digital Cameras
• Laptops
• iPods/MP3 Players
• GPS Devices

Each school collects the following items near their main offices or in their cafeterias:

• Pull Tabs (from aluminum cans)
• Plastic Rings (from multi-pack items)
• Gym Shoes (in the spring, exact dates to be announced)
• Book Barrel (new or gently-used books/magazines to be sold in the spring to students, for a few cents each)
• Laser and Inkjet Cartridges (for Fund 69)
• Unused Greeting Cards

At Edison only:

• Aluminum Cans
• Share Our Supplies -- SOS (new or gently-used supplies distributed to those in need at the discretion of the principal and/or teachers)

Please remember that even the smallest thing you do has great impact! With the upcoming fall and winter holidays nearly upon us, we are increasingly thinking of others. You can find many ideas at the library or on the Internet for creating gifts by reusing products from your own homes. You can help various charities by donating to those organizations which send trucks to your neighborhoods – our “old” things can be just what somebody else might need. Please don't forget our local food pantries, and those on the east coast affected by Hurricane Sandy. Finally, please remember our servicemen and servicewomen
