NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM:

District 69 participates in the National School Lunch Program and is subject to the requirements of this federally assisted program that provides nutritionally balanced meals for all students.  Each meal served meets 1/3 of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for elementary and junior high students.  No more than 30% of the calories come from fat and less than 10% comes from saturated fat as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Children are never forced to eat food that they do not like, however they are always encouraged to try new items.  All children participating in the National School Lunch Program must select at least three of five meal components so that their lunch qualifies as a complete meal.  The daily menu offers both a meat entree and a non-meat entree.

FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS:

Free and reduced priced meals are available for children whose family qualifies based on size of household and income level, or by eligibility for SNAP or TANF benefits.  The household eligibility guidelines, as well as the policies governing this program, are determined annually by the State of Illinois and the Federal Government.  Approximately 50% of District 69's students qualify to receive this assistance.  Applications for Free or Reduced Priced Meals will be mailed to District 69 families in July, 2012.

Parents are responsible for submitting one application per family with appropriate and accurate information.  Failure to provide complete information will result in being ineligible for benefits.  Families will be notified of their benefit status by letter.  Families must re-apply for meal benefits every year.

Annually, the State requires a random verification to ensure that only those families who are eligible are receiving meal benefits.  Families who are selected for verification must provide the requested documentation to prove that the information on the application is accurate and qualifies the family for continued meal benefits.
