Welcome to Room 116

Welcome to Mrs. Sand's webpage!  We are going to work hard, but have so much fun this year.  Learning is a process,  and everyone learns in different ways.  This is why in my class we will do a variety of things, including projects, presentations, research, acting, and experiments to reach each student and enhance their learning.  We also take movement breaks, and can be seen doing "Sandaerobics" to keep our minds fresh!  Responsibility is a very big deal in fifth grade.  The students are getting older now, and will be moving on to junior high next year.  I will expect them to come to class with all of their materials (including homework) each day.  I do not allow students to call home for because they forgot something.  Therefore, it is very important to set up a system with your child, such as getting all items packed up and ready for school the night before and placed in a location where they will not be forgotten.  Getting enough sleep and eating a healthy breakfast will also help your child be prepared for a day full of learning.  I am looking forward to a wonderful year, and can't wait to see everyone!

math

We have a new math program this year!  I am so excited to dive into our new books.  The program has many interactive components for lessons, and online tools that students can use at home to help them with homework, practice computation, and play math games. In an effort to reach all students at their level, we have added a 6th grade level math class.  If a child qualifies for this class, he or she will receive a note home within the first week or so of school.  I will be teaching this math class, and therefore students who are in my homeroom but not in this class will be placed in other 5th grade classes during this time.

5th Grade Curriculum

What are we doing in fifth grade?  That is an excellent question!  5th grade is a big year for students.  We have high expectations for students academically, socially, and in regards to their behavior.  In addition, we expect students to take on more responsibility for organizing materials, and having everything they need at school.  This means that there will be no phone calls home for forgotten homework, instruments, or lunches.  The students need to take responsibility for this on their own.  I have provided links below to my curriculum map for the year, as well as to my class behavior plan.  Please take some time to check these out.
