Ms. Prena's Helpful Hints for Parents

Here are some activities that you can do at home to help develop your child’s literacy skills.

· Read books and tell stories to your child.

· Provide reading and writing materials (pencils, pens, paper, colored pencils, dictionary,

thesaurus) in a specific place at home.

· Check your child’s assignment notebook every night.  See if they are completing homework

      assignments.

· Share your values, your religion, your experiences at work, and your daily activities with your

     children.

· Listen to your children and ask them questions about what happened at school, on the bus,

     etc.

· Listen to their dreams about the future, their opinions, their fears and anything else.

· Convert daily activities into learning opportunities (i.e., watch for the mail together, sort the

     clean clothes, cook together.)

· Expand your child’s world by exploring the community (i.e., go to the zoo, observe nature,

travel on the train or bus using maps and street signs).

· Attend events at school, at the library, and in the community.
