Welcome to Room 8!

Second Grade is a wonderful year filled with huge gains academically and well as socially and emotionally!  Second Graders are eager, enthusiastic learners who make every day in Room 8 a joyful, dynamic, and exciting place to be!  Here's a little more on what we're doing over the course of our very busy year:

Reading:
Second graders work hard to become fluent readers, explore both fiction and non fiction texts, use comprehension strategies like cause & effect, main idea & detail, and analyzing narrative structure.  They build on their existing phonics knowledge and explore reading and spelling multi-syllabic words. Second graders work daily to increase their vocabulary to become better readers.

Writing:
Second graders strive to ensure every sentence starts with a capital and ends with punctuation and to always use their best handwriting.  They learn about subjects and predicates, different parts of speech, and subject-verb agreement.  They work to ensure their stories are structured to have a beginning, middle, and ending.  They strive to add details to their writing and to use colorful words that paint pictures in their reader's minds.

Math:
Second graders build off addition and subtraction fluency skills from first grade to explore more complex mathematical concepts. Second graders work with numbers up to 1,000, tell time to 5 minute intervals, count mixed coins, skip count by 2,5, and 10 to build a base for multiplication, learn how to add and subtract with regrouping, explore fractions, and continue to build measurement skills.

Social Studies:
Second graders study rural, urban, and suburb communities.  They begin learn about the city, state, and national governments.  This is especially exciting in a Presidential Election year!  Students also learn how to read maps and study the continents and the oceans.

Science:
Second graders become meteorologists by studying weather and learning about severe weather events.  They also learn about how matter changes from a solid to a liquid to a gas.  Finally, they raise Painted Lady Butterflies and Luna Moths before going to Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in May!

About me

I have a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University and am working on an MAT at National Louis University in Elementary Education.  My philosophy of education is that children learn best when exposed to a variety of activities and experiences in a safe, positive environment.  I believe that all children can learn and need to be in their least restrictive environment.  I absolutely love being your child's teacher and would love to talk with you about your child at any time!
