Room 8 gets a visit from Ms. Davis.

OUCH

On Monday, Ms. Davis read Room 8 a book about bullying and talked with students about how words can hurt just as much (if not more) than unsafe bodies. Students colored pictures of themselves and thought of ways that they can STOMP OUT BULLYING at Madison School.  On February 27th, students and teachers will wear pink to support STOMP OUT BULLYING day!

Room 8 Loves Guest Readers!

Today Room 8 hosted Mrs. Debra Cohen as a guest reader!  She read a book about the superhero, Thor.  Read Alouds are an important part in improving students reading ability; they provide models of fluent reading, promote the idea that reading is a fun life-long activity, and introduce students to new books!  Students in Room 8 love to be read to and love having their own family members come in and read.  Please contact me ( This email address is being protected from spambots. Room 8 writes Thank You Letters to the Cast of Gooney Bird Greene!

Today, the Madison Super Hawks were delighted to welcome students from Lincoln Junior High as they perfomed a shortened version of Gooney Bird Greene.  The students in Room 8 were thrilled by the performance and wanted to thank the cast and tell them what a great job they did.  Room 8's students wrote properly punctuated friendly letters (one of the Second Grade Common Core English Language Arts Standards) to our fantastic guest performers  We'll finish the letters up tomorrow (and add a little glitter for sparkle) before sending them off to LJH!

Room 8 Learns About Organization

One of the 6 Traits of Good Writing is Organization!  It’s so important to be able to organize your thoughts and stories so they make sense to your reader.  To help us practice, Room 8 read Scaredy Squirrel, a book that shows many different ways to organize thoughts.  In this very funny book, Scaredy Squirrel uses lists, schedules, and plans to help organize his day, escape danger, and make decisions.  After reading the book, tables worked together on a project to practice this very savvy squirrel’s methods.

Room 8 Welcomes Jay, Bob and Green Ninja!

Today, the students of Room 8 brainstormed names and voted for their favorites to name our 3 Yellow Poison Dart Frogs (phyllobates terribilis).  Please welcome Jay, Bob, and Green Ninja to the Madison School family.  They were graciously donated to Room 8 by Miss Miller's brother who raises all sorts of frogs, lizards and bulldogs.  Although the name "Yellow Poison Dart Frogs" sounds dangerous, these frogs aren't!  To be able to make the "poison" they're named for, they have to eat ant from South America.  Our frogs were raised in captivity in the United States and eat only crickets and mealworms.  They're perfectly safe!  Students in Room 8 have had a great time this week observing our new pets and are so excited to help take care of them this school year!IMG 0907

Welcome to Room 8!

Second Grade is a wonderful year filled with huge gains academically and well as socially and emotionally!  Second Graders are eager, enthusiastic learners who make every day in Room 8 a joyful, dynamic, and exciting place to be!  Here's a little more on what we're doing over the course of our very busy year:

Reading:
Second graders work hard to become fluent readers, explore both fiction and non fiction texts, use comprehension strategies like cause & effect, main idea & detail, and analyzing narrative structure.  They build on their existing phonics knowledge and explore reading and spelling multi-syllabic words. Second graders work daily to increase their vocabulary to become better readers.

Writing:
Second graders strive to ensure every sentence starts with a capital and ends with punctuation and to always use their best handwriting.  They learn about subjects and predicates, different parts of speech, and subject-verb agreement.  They work to ensure their stories are structured to have a beginning, middle, and ending.  They strive to add details to their writing and to use colorful words that paint pictures in their reader's minds.

Math:
Second graders build off addition and subtraction fluency skills from first grade to explore more complex mathematical concepts. Second graders work with numbers up to 1,000, tell time to 5 minute intervals, count mixed coins, skip count by 2,5, and 10 to build a base for multiplication, learn how to add and subtract with regrouping, explore fractions, and continue to build measurement skills.

Social Studies:
Second graders study rural, urban, and suburb communities.  They begin learn about the city, state, and national governments.  This is especially exciting in a Presidential Election year!  Students also learn how to read maps and study the continents and the oceans.

Science:
Second graders become meteorologists by studying weather and learning about severe weather events.  They also learn about how matter changes from a solid to a liquid to a gas.  Finally, they raise Painted Lady Butterflies and Luna Moths before going to Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in May!

About me

I have a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University and am working on an MAT at National Louis University in Elementary Education.  My philosophy of education is that children learn best when exposed to a variety of activities and experiences in a safe, positive environment.  I believe that all children can learn and need to be in their least restrictive environment.  I absolutely love being your child's teacher and would love to talk with you about your child at any time!
